Editorial: When The Worker's Take-Home Pay Does Not Get Home

Image
Year 1886, the significant year that heralded open agitations for humane time frame within  which a worker should labour is three centuries away, yet the struggle for better welfare packages by workers has remained a recurring decimal in several nations of the world. However, this agitations seem louder in the developing nations. In 1886, workers agitated for the 8 hour per day work time and for the first time this was achieved. Before this agitation, workers were made to work at the timing and discretion of their employees. But today across the world, at least in the public service and formal work environments, the eight hour per day work limit is respected. Over the years, agitations for better working conditions have  led to a lot of improvements. For instance, workers in the civil service and the formal sectors enjoy annual leave, leave grants, promotion and increment in salaries, public holidays, training and retraining to build their capacities among other incenti...

Image
Sampson Enyongekere A Chartered Engineer who is fully registered with the British Engineering  Council, Engr. (Dr.) Wisdom Patrick Enang, says that unlocking the abundant agricultural potentials in Akwa Ibom State will boost food sufficiency, and bring mega revenue to the State. Dr. Wisdom Enang dropped the hint on Friday, April 7, while speaking with  journalists on the need to boost food sufficiency and develop agro-allied products beyond just the subsistence level.  The shrewd Oil and Gas Consultant said that as a State with clear comparative advantage in commodities like palm produce, Akwa Ibom should have evolved its farming goal from achieving food sufficiency, to becoming a major revenue earner from same. Defining Agriculture as the cultivation of crops and rearing of animals, both for economic and domestic purposes, the ebullient youth and leadership coach, informed that the agricultural sector of an economy remains exceptionally the most important sector o...

EDITORIAL: Poor Mobilization For The 2023 Census

Image
Over seventeen years ago, precisely in 2006, a population and housing census was conducted and the full impact of that project has been largely unclear. This is  because as shameful as it is, even the federal, state and local governments which need statistics and the demographic data of the census for planning cannot authenticate the figures. Figures have only been bandied around, yet Nigerian leaders expect they could plan with such a guess material. This poor conduct of the 2006 national census explains why the country has been wobbling in all sectors. Census is the main tool for planning, so that each sector will get finances and other resources to achieve results. It is common place to hear leaders at different levels and this includes the Presidency, Members of the National Assembly, Governors, State Houses of Assembly Members, Local Government Chairmen, mention all kinds of figures when it came to a discussion on the population of Nigeria. At no one time have two leaders ment...
