AKSU Gets Campus Radio, Splits Mass Communication into 4 Depts

•••As VC Outlines 67 PG Programmes, 42 Faculties

License and other certifications has be secured for a new Campus Radio Station, AKSU Fm, to add value to broadcast students in Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU).

Mass Communication has also been splited into four departments of Public Relations, Advertising, Broadcasting, Journalism and Media Studies to ensure specialisation.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Nse Essien disclosed this during his familiarisation visit to the State Executive Committee of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Akwa Ibom State Council yesterday.

Prof Essien further stated that 67 Post Graduate Programmes spanning from PGD, MSC, MPA, MBA and Ph.D has been approved for the institution, adding that 42 academic programmes has also gained full accreditation in the Akwa Ibom State University. He assured that the departments of Sociology & Anthropology, Biochemistry, Banking and Finance will  receive full accreditation in less than no time.



The Vice Chancellor also mentioned that the institution has introduced the  Rejoin University Preliminary Examination Board (RUPEB) programme, which he said, will give nine months academic training to students with low JAMB scores, and  give them direct entry into their desired programmes in the university.

He further disclosed the introduction of part-time programmes to enhance greater academic attainment in and outside the State.

He specifically applauded the State Council of NUJ for waging war against quackery, and called for an intensified efforts to stem the tide in journalism practice. He however called for collaboration between the university and NUJ in order to ensure greater output.


While Commending Governor Udom Emmanuel's huge  commitment and investment in the education sector, vis-avis Akwa Ibom State University, Prof Essien vowed to justify the confidence reposed in him by the State Government by working to make the institution a center of academic excellence.
 

On his part,the State Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Amos Etuk commended  the  Prof.Nse Essien for being the first Vice Chancellor of any institution in the State to pay a visit to the NUJ,describing the step taken by the AKSU VC towards strengthening media relations and partnership as apt, timely  and very rewarding. He saluted his initiative of establishing radio station in the University and unbundling of the department of Mass Communication to accommodate other critical areas of Media such as broadcasting, Advertising, Journalism and Media Studies and Public Relations.

The NUJ boss urged those who are desirous to join the noble profession to present themselves to the University for professional training, rather than swelling the gang of quackery and interlopers. He hinted the University Don that NUJ in Akwa Ibom State enjoys full trust and confidence of Akwa Ibom State Government, stressing that they will remain resolute in reporting Akwa Ibom State best to the World.

The Vice Chancellor was accompanied to the Visit by the Vice Chancellor Academic, Prof Umoren Umoren, Head of Information and Public Relations,Mr. Akaninyene Ibanga.
