AKHA Stops Umo Eno From Extending LG Transition Committee Tenure

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has turned down a request by the State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, to extend the tenure of Local Government Transition Committees.

This is coming ahead of the June 7, 2024 expiration date of the current tenure of Local Government Transition Committees in the state.

In a letter addressed to the Speaker and read by Clerk of the Assembly, Mrs NsikakAbasi Orok at Thursday Plenary, Governor Eno said it was necessary to extend the tenure of the local government officials, pending when the Akwa Ibom State Independence Electoral Commission would conduct Local Government Election in the State.

The Governor's message was received through a Motion moved by Rt. Hon. Asuquo Nana Udo of Ikono State Constituency, and seconded by Rt. Hon. Mfon Idung of Etim Ekpo/Ika State Constituency.

However, the Speaker of the Assembly, Udeme Otong, while responding to the Governor's request, said the Lawmakers will review the activities of each local government council, since there are currently no elected councilors to perform such function.

The House subsequently mandated its Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to assess the performance of the current Transition Committees before considering a tenure extension.
