CSR: Reps Committee scores Oriental Energy high

Prof. Oby Lilian Orogbu, (M), flanked by members of the Committee, manager of Oriental Energy Resources Limited, Royal Fathers and youths from Mbo host communities, after an interactive session with Oriental Energy Resources Limited and the Mbo local government host communities, presided by the House of Representative Committee on Implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility, held in Uyo last Thursday.

The House of Representatives Committee on Implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility(CSR), has expressed satisfaction with the Oriental Energy Resources Limited for keeping to the tenets of Corporate Social Responsibility with its operational communities in Akwa Ibom State. 

The Committee has also threatened erring oil companies who have failed to keep to the dictates of the Corporate Social Responsibility as encapsulated in the Petroleum Industrial Acts (PIA), reiterating that such firms will not go unpunished. 

The official commissioning and handing over of the Climate Monitoring and Observation Station built for the University of Uyo (Uniuyo) at the permanent site of the institution, Nwanina road, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom capital. 

Speaking during an interactive session with Oriental Energy Resources Limited and the Mbo local government host communities, presided by the House of Representative Committee on Implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility, held in Uyo last Thursday, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Prof. Oby Lilian Orogbu expressed happiness over positive testimonies received from representatives of the host communities, noting that the oil firm has lived upto expectations. 

Facilities Inspection of the Climate Monitoring and Observation Station built for the University of Uyo (Uniuyo) by Oriental Energy Resources Limited, at the permanent site of the institution, Nwanina road, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom capital. 

"Having heard all the submissions from the representative of all the communities in Mbo local government area, I can say that we are highly impressed. We are happy to hear the level of engagements, the level of responsibility that Oriental Energy Resources Limited has shown to the Mbo communities. We are happy that they have been able to provide at least to a reasonable extent the infrastructure in these communities." Hon Orogbu stated. 

"We are representing the people. The 10th Assembly is people oriented Assembly. Our focus is majorly the welfare of the people. That is why we advocate that the host communities provide necessary information that will aide the committee to do the needful. By the wisdom of the 10th Assembly, this Committee was created to drive both private and public companies to ensure that they give back to the society by way of ensuring that the roads are built and maintained, provide electricity to the communities, water and other necessary things for the growth and wellbeing of the host communities. I want to once again thank Oriental Energy Resources Limited for all they have done so far. We will present this report to the 10th Assembly accordingly " she added. 

Meanwhile, the management of Oriental Energy Resources Limited had earlier in the same day, led the House of Representatives Committee on Implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility to the commissioning and handing over of the Climate Monitoring and Observation Station built for the University of Uyo (Uniuyo) at the permanent site of the institution, Nwanina road, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom capital. 

Speaking at the commissioning, the Managing Director of Oriental Energy Resources Limited Mr Mustafa Ndimi,  mentioned that the Climate Monitoring and Observation Station which is in fulfilment of the promise made to the institution by Oriental Energy in the first quarter of 2022, will provide practical experience for the various components of climatology and climate change studies in the University among other numerous benefits. 

Mr Ndimi who was represented by Kazeem Koleoso explained further that the project was a practical demonstration of Oriental Energy's contribution to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 13 as adopted by the United Nations in September 2015, which requires that urgent step are taken by the public and private sectors to combat climate change and its impacts, by mitigating its effects, promoting adaptation and increasing resilience to climate related hazards. 

Reacting to the gesture, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Prof Nyaudo Ndaeyo thanked the oil firm for practically demystifying the Corporate Social Responsibility in Akwa Ibom State and for the provision of  the project in the institution. 

He promised to put the project to good use for the benefit of the students, and pleaded  for the phase two of the Climate Monitoring and Observation Station.

Present at the events were the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Environment and Mineral Resources, Mr Uno Etim Uno, Royal fathers, youths and elders from the host communities of Mbo local government area.
