Budgit Foundation Trains Nsit Ubium Residents on Budget Tracking

 

Participants at the Budgit Foundation community sensitization engagement held in Ikot Iyire, Nsit Ubium local government area last weekend. 

In a bid to inculcate in citizens the habit of holding government accountable, a non-governmental organization, Budgit Foundation has concluded a one day community sensitization engagement in Ikot Iyire, Nsit Ubium local government area. 

The programme which took place last weekend in the area, was aimed at empowering community members with accurate knowledge to be active in the running of government for proper inclusion, as well as the budgetary process, steps involved in constructively engaging political office holders, and effectively tracking budgets for proper execution. 

Addressing journalists at the end of the sensitization engagement, the Akwa Ibom State Officer for Budgit Foundation, James Akpan mentioned that Budgit Foundation has the sole responsibility of empowering community members to remain active and involved in the day-to-day functioning of the government for better inclusion.

"The objective of the just concluded engagement was to empower community members and make them to be active in the running and functioning of government for proper inclusion, and to also let them know about the budgetary process, and  steps involved in it, teach them how to engage their locally elected leaders, how to make demand and write to them, and effectively traci budgets in their community for proper execution using tech tools by Budgit, which is Govspend.ng, to demand accountability from their leaders." He explained. 

He expressed pleasure over the turn out and rapt attention by the participants, as well as their readiness to engage their political office holders positively through the directives taught by Budgit. 

Reacting to the gesture, a community leader, Mr. Nsikak Sunday lauded Budgit for such enlightenment brought to them for free, and assured that they will be  following strictly the directives given by Budgit to track budgets and ensure proper development in the area. 

Highpoint of the one-day engagement was community sensitization, teaching participants about the budgetary process ranging from  steps involved, how the community can engage their locally elected leaders, how to submit their needs in writing, how to participate in local politics, and how to effectively track community projects to ensure proper execution. 

The extensive and interactive session was attended by youths, women, elders, and people with disabilities. Participants were also taught how to use technological tools, such as Govspend.ng by Budgit to demand accountability from their leaders.
